Medina Villa

Sharjah, UAE

The idea for the Medina House arose from the study of the historic city centre of Sharjah. With recent developments following the historic city plan the “Heart of Sharjah” is currently being brought to new life. Rambling footprints result in a maze of small streets revealing a surprising new view whenever turning around the corner of one of the narrow alleys. The city as a whole remains hidden, merely indicated in the small squares from which always many alleys depart. For the design of the Medina House we have borrowed the concept of indication by concealing views to create privacy within the house. Single building volumes are grouped around a square-like clearing. They interlock so the direct view out of the building is blocked, though light falls into the space through windows behind the bends. The aggressive sunlight is filtered and diminished before it reaches the internal spaces. The pool is framed by a larger opening facing the garden. The top floor is designed according to the same principle, but shifted so internal and exterior balconies result. The Medina House reflects local and traditional concepts of space and construction re-interpreting them into a “house as a city”.THe design will be built in a newly developed part of Sharjah in what today is part of the desert.
