Art Zone

Sharjah, 2015 - 2017

The Art Zone is a 3.000 m² large roofed interactive park featuring attractions for kids and youths introducing them to various artistic themes and techniques. The building is located in the Al Majaz park facing the Khor Khalid Lagoon and close to the city centre of Sharjah, UAE. The interactive art zone is covered with a double layered membrane structure allowing for a high degree of natural ventilation. The resulting space is a hybrid – more open than a fully enclosed building, but sufficiently contained to be more than a garden. The new roof structure takes into account the previously completed design of the landscape and art zone attractions providing a minimal structural impact on the exhibition. Three columns push up a membrane providing large open spaces underneath. The membrane has a 4% light transmittance minimizing the need for artificial lighting. On the perimeter a steel retaining wall with insulation contains the soil forming the undulated landscape. The outer membrane is formed by a larger number of sails attached to a steel net providing shading for the membrane below. They have different levels of opening according to sun position. The shades are proposed in the shape of kites that assembling two conically shaped textiles with varying opening size in the central axis. The triangles are fixed in the corners to the wire net and to a flexing profile for variation of the opening size and foldless single curved shape of the triangular shades. It is perforated in a way that directs and compresses wind cooling the inner skin in a simple and natural way. A mechanical cooling system supports the natural cooling. The perforation of the external skin creates a playful and intriguing pattern of shadows on the internal skin animating the park. With the interactive attractions visitors explore themes like color, sound, reflection, composition and patterns in a playful and entertaining way.
